Weekend in Valeggio sul Mincio
For Valentine’s Day, we visited Valeggio sul Mincio and Borghetto. They were beautiful, riverside towns and we had a quiet, relaxing weekend. Well, it was quiet during travel restrictions. I’m sure it was booming pre-Covid.
Our accommodation was within walking distance to Parco Giardino Sigurta (was closed when we were there), the castle, Borghetto, bike rentals, etc. We had planned to ride bikes to Lago di Garda, but that didn’t work out. One bike shop was closed and the other was only open a few hours on Sunday. But these two towns are definitely worth a visit! They’re in Veneto and about an hour drive from Ederle. You could do it all in one day, if you desired. If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend outdoors, in a village town, this is definitely a good option. If you’re looking for a booming town with many options, this may not be for you.
Where did you stay?
We stayed right in the center of Valeggio. A great location for exploring both towns. It probably would’ve been more ‘romantic’ to stay in Borghetto overlooking the river, but I’d definitely stay in this Airbnb again.
Accommodation: Airbnb w/terrace and full kitchen.
What did you do?
Visited the castle at night.
Walked both towns and took photos.
A lot of relaxing.
I suggest renting a bike and riding along the Mincio on a bike path to Peschiera. If regions change colors, just know part of the bike path is in Lombardy. I don’t know that the covid police will be checking borders on the bike path.
Bike rental: Bike Experience or Pedalando Vai
On our way home, we stopped in Lazise for a quick stroll around the town and a cappuccino by the lake.
What did you eat?
One night we ordered pizza from Super Pizza and it was super! If you know me at all, you know I love pizza and eat it regularly in every place I visit.
It was not easy finding a place to eat. We set out one day to Borghetto hoping to have a nice lunch at a restaurant, but after three stops and three no’s we ended up back in Valeggio at a pub, Victoria Pub; which turned out to be really good. We had hamburgers and I had a dark beer to boot.
The same thing happened at dinner. This time, I went to the shop and bought some tortellini, which is what Valeggio is known for, wine, and parmesan. I cooked dinner in the room and it was fabulous.
For lunch the following day, I made reservations for Trattoria Fornello. If you are in the area, you should not miss this hidden gem. It’s about a seven minute drive from Valeggio in a wee tiny village. It was down-home cooking, a cozy atmosphere, and delightful wine made by the owner of the trattoria whom I met while taking photos of the leafless vineyard (it was February).
Final thoughts: I loved this weekend trip. Our itinerary wasn’t jam packed and we got to leisurely stroll, relax, and eat well. I like those trips occasionally.
