I may tell you a travel story, share a list of things to do, an itinerary, or something totally irrelevant to travel, but beneficial for life. Either way, have fun looking around. This is my hobby and travel is my passion, so I can get away with contradicting the marketing strategies of the week.

Oahu is more affordable than most realize. It's a family-friendly, tropical destination with dozens of things to do, see, and experience for FREE or $25 or less per person.

So many great hiking spots! Visit Best of Oahu for information.

Friday/any day Activities (all in Honolulu)

  • Listen to the Royal Hawaiian Band at Iolani Palace on Fridays 12:00-1:00 p.m.

  • Watch hula and fire knife show for FREE at Hyatt Regency on Friday evenings.

  • Visit Iolani Palace at any time to take pictures!

    • The Palace offers complimentary tickets to kamaaina on Kamaaina Sundays; which is the 2nd Sunday of the month.

  • Across the street from Iolani Palace will be the police station you’ll notice from Hawaii 5-0.

  • Go (window) shopping at King’s Village Shopping Center.

  • Watch fireworks behind Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa on Friday evenings in remembrance and celebration of King Kalakaua's Jubilee.

  • Jam with Hawaii's best entertainers performing in the hotels and on the streets of Waikiki.

  • Enjoy "Sunset on the Beach" - an outdoor movie theater, with live entertainment, food booths, and free movies.

  • See some of Hawaii's stunning architecture by visiting these churches - St. Andrews Cathedral, Central Union, St. Clements, Lutheran Church of Honolulu.

  • Must see - Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (FREE and the best view of the city).

Saturday/Any day Activities

  • Byodo Temple in Kaneohe ($3/pp).

  • Enjoy a few malasadas, Portuguese-style doughnuts, without the holes.

  • Art at the Zoo Fence along the fence of the Honolulu Zoo on Monsarrat Avenue, every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Saturday morning hit the Swap Meet for Souvenirs! Only buy souvenirs here. (South side)

  • Hike Makapu’u to see the lighthouse. (South/east side)

  • Once you finish hiking Makapu’u go further east to see the blowhole. (South/east side)

  • Visit Diamond Head beach to watch kite surfers, wind surfers, and see the Diamond Head lighthouse. (South side)

  • See Bellows Beach! (East side)

  • Drive the Waianae Coast (West side)

  • Listen to live Hawaiian bands at Makahiki (backside of Aulani at Ko’olina) while enjoying tropical drinks and pupus (appetizers). (West side)

  • Enjoy a quick snack in Haleiwa, on Oahu's North Shore. Like an acai bowl from Haleiwa Bowls. (North shore)

  • Visit Ala Moana Mall, if you dare (South side)

Fun for $25 or less

  • Go sailing on Saturday! Hula's Catamaran*

  • Rent a paddle board for $15 in Haleiwa at Tropical Rush (by the rainbow bridge). Paddle down the river (no waves, but many sea turtles).

  • Walk the path at Waimea Valley to the beautiful waterfalls and take a swim! ($10 mil or $16 reg)

If you want a culturally rich experience (more than $25), visit Kualoa Ranch*, Polynesian Cultural Center*, and Paradise Cove Luau*.

*Military -visit the MWR for tickets.
